1. Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor passes away aged 79
Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor, known for his films like 'Deewaar', passed away today at the age of 79 in Mumbai. The actor, who had been ill for a while, is survived by his three children Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor, and Sanjana Kapoor. He had been honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2011 and the 2014 Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
2. Paytm Payments Bank rolls out Paytm FASTag across India
Paytm Payments Bank on Monday rolled out Paytm FASTag to enable electronic toll fee collection on highways across India without having to stop. The tag, linked to a Paytm account, uses Radio-Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) to automatically deduct toll charges. It comes after the government's move to make 'FASTag' mandatory on every new vehicle sold from December 1.
3. Venezuela to launch oil-backed cryptocurrency 'Petro'
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has announced the creation of a new cryptocurrency in a bid to ease the country's economic crisis. It will be called the 'Petro' and will be backed by the nation's oil, gold, gas, and diamond reserves. He said the Petro would help Venezuela recover financially after the US imposed sanctions.
4. Bio-vacuum toilets will keep the stench away in trains
Stinky toilets in trains will soon be flushed away. Starting January 2018, Indian Railways will roll out first 100 coaches with bio-vacuum toilets like the ones in passenger airplanes. The bio-toilets in trains will be odour free, cut down water usage by one-twentieth and will have much lesser chances of getting blocked.
The Railways has been grappling with upkeep of bio-toilets as there were several complaints of them getting blocked due to dumping of waste such as plastic bottles, paper, cardboard boxes in the pot. Trials of bio-vacuum toilets were done in the Railways’ newly-launched premium train Tejas, and it has now been decided to install them out in other trains.
5. Paytm to invest $2.5 billion in e-comm business Paytm Mall
Paytm has its sights set on becoming a significant player in the ecommerce space with its ecommerce unit Paytm Mall. Founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma said that Paytm plans to invest up to $2.5 Bn to grow its nascent online shopping portal business within three to five years as it eyes top spot currently being fought over by Flipkart and Amazon.
6. December 4: Indian Navy Day
The Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 to commemorate the launch of Operation Trident against Pakistan's naval headquarters during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The operation was successful as it sank four Pakistani ships and also crippled the Karachi port and fuel depot. On the other hand, the Indian Navy suffered no casualties or damage to its ships.

India returned with a solitary bronze medal by Deepika Kumari at the Indoor Archery World Cup Stage 2 that concluded in Bangkok. 9. Prithvi Shaw named India's captain for 2018 U-19 World Cup
Mumbai's 18-year-old batsman Prithvi Shaw has been named the captain of the Indian Under-19 team for the 2018 U-19 World Cup, scheduled to be held in New Zealand staring January 13. This comes after Shaw slammed three tons and two fifties in five Ranji Trophy matches this season. Punjab's Shubman Gill has been named as Shaw's deputy.
10. China launches land exploration satellite
China launched a land exploration satellite into a preset orbit, designed for remote sensing exploration of land resources. The satellite was launched on a Long March-2D rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China’s northern Gobi Desert at 12:11 PM (local time), state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The satellite is mainly used for remote sensing exploration of land resources.
11. Bharti Airtel acquires strategic stake in Juggernaut Books
Bharti Airtel, the telecommunications service provider, has said it has acquired a strategic stake in Juggernaut Books, a digital platform to discover and read high quality, affordable books and to submit amateur writing. The investment is in line with Airtel’s endeavour to build an open content ecosystem and bring world-class digital content to its customers. The investment from Airtel will enable Juggernaut to ramp up content acquisition, digital marketing and prepare for a subscription offering launch in the next few months.
12. 8 PSU banks to raise capital from market by March
As many as eight public sector banks (PSBs) have decided to raise capital from the market within four months as part of the Rs. 2.11 lakh crore recapitalisation plan. Some banks have already got approval from the Finance Ministry, while others are in the process of getting the green signal for raising capital either through private placement or a rights issue. Most banks prefer the Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) route, sources said, adding that Punjab National Bank (PNB) would be the first to hit the market to raise Rs. 5,000 crore. Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Allahabad Bank and Andhra Bank are gearing up for the share sale.
